Let’s talk about your journey to find a newborn photographer to capture your new bundle. What are you going to look for? How do you decide which one is best for you? There are many things to look for…
For me, the number one priority would be safety. Is the photographer certified in newborn posing safety? One may have a lot of experience holding a baby, but there are so many safety aspects to consider and know about in order to pose those little squishes perfectly and SAFELY. I am a Qualified Newborn Photographer, I have my Safety Certification through APNPI (since 2018), and I have the specialized tools to assist me. Ongoing education is also important to me, and I invest a great deal of my budget and time annually.
Photographing newborns is not the same as photographing children, families or weddings. Mastering the tiniest details is so important so that you will have beautiful images to remind you of how little and perfect baby was. Working with the correct lighting, technical details, creativity, use of colour and composition are all important elements, all the while keeping baby comfortable. I have won numerous awards with images where very critical judges look for these exact aspects.
Style!! Of course a style which suits you is very important! You have to love your images in the end. I have a client closet that is gasp-worthy (not for only newborns, but also children and mamas!). I have gathered beautiful items from over the world to offer a large selection of colours, styles and gorgeous textures. It is very safe to say I shop more for my client closet than for myself! I prepare setups for each session prior to baby coming, but you are always welcome to switch things to your liking!
People always ask me when the best time is to bring baby in for photos. The best time to capture your new bundle is within the first few weeks. During this time they are still sleepy, bendy and so squishy. Although I typically recommend within the first 16 days, I will take them up to 8 weeks (and have had so much success with these!).
And last, budget…the price for newborn photography can vary quite a bit. It is important to remember that photographers put so much more into a session than just the time spent with you. A photographer that is running a legal business with insurance, lots of training, equipment and other business expenses will almost always be more expensive. When booking your session, always remember, you get what you pay for. These images are forever…consider your investment carefully.
